Geocaching Fun with Numbers, Dates and Times
For those of you who do not know, I am a geocacher. My wife is a cacher and our three year old son is a cacher. Our three month old has not yet come to love the sport. What is geocaching? A global GPS based adventure game of hide and seek! Google it for more details.
Geocaching has provided me with hours and hours of free entertainment on the road, and being that I am on different roads quite often, I have found some very interesting places as a result of finding geocaches. As a family, we have found over 1400 geocaches in 40 states and a dozen different countries from China to Peru, India to New Zealand!
Also, for those of you who do not know, I am weird about numbers. I always call out palindromes on the odometer, I have son born on 456789, and the other son was born on 12-11-12… you get the point.
With the above knowledge in hand, I have copied my “Found” post I logged yesterday at the cache “Sun up at Quorum” below for you to enjoy. Of course, for the post below to make sense, you must read up on this cache. You can view the cache here. Look for the entry by skydive121, my geocaching name. It has my pictures of the geocache.
Found at 12:34 pm on March 21, 2013!
Dumb luck actually. I happened to be in town on business eating at a nearby restaurant that shares my name and I decided to grab a cache afterward the meal. Well, you don’t see too many virtual caches around so I thought I would grab this one.
I wandered into the GZ and found the plaque and realized I had awesome timing! It was a little after noon on March 21! What else could I do but wait for the magic time of 12:34 pm? So I patiently waited for the equinox to occur; constantly checking and cross-checking my watch, my cell phone and a web site with an atomic clock. All three where in sync.
Finally, the day, the hour and the minute arrived!
Imagine my disappointment when the sun/shadow/sphere were a good foot off center It ended up being about 20 minutes late passing through the cross hairs. Oh well, it was still a fun cache and a great event to witness.
